Wild Blueberry - The Health and Beauty Superfruit
This month we are celebrating blueberries from the wild! Wild blueberries and cultivated blueberries are not the same fruit. At Island Skincare, we always use hand picked, wild grown blueberries. Wild blueberry ( vaccinium angustifolium ) grow wild in Newfoundland on the heathlands, barrens, in forests and on exposed rocky hills.
There are 7 species of wild bluberry in Atlantic Canada - it is a well known boreal botanical superfruit to the locals. They are a low growing shrub (2-24 inches in length) that form dense colonies. You know you have found a great berry picking patch when the ground looks blue from afar! The season for picking ranges from mid August to early October.
Wild blueberries boast nearly twice as many health-boosting antioxidants as their cultivated counterparts. Research shows the berry skin has highest concentration of the antioxidant anthocyanin and because our berries are tinier than the cultivated blueberries they are much more potent due to more berry surface skin. They are more time consuming to pick but the tiny ones taste the best! There is nothing like eating them while you berry pick. You can enjoy the free-radical neutralizing benefits of these super fruits as a healthy snack with just 80 calories in a cup. Eating 1/2 a cup a day will reduce skin sensitivities. Beauty from within is definitely the best place to start on your healthy journey to beautiful crystal clear skin.
These wild grown fruits have been growing in Atlantic Canada for over 10,000 years now they are Canada's #1 fruit export
This super fruit may not be easily accessible in your neck of the woods so we have included some links to companies that sell wild blueberry food and beverage outside the Atlantic.
